Archer and T'Pol, after a perilous trek across a Vulcan desert, finally locate the Syrrannites, a revolutionary faction blamed for the bombing of the Earth embassy. The Syrrannites, with a young T'Pau at helms, claim to embrace the true teachings of Surak — the father of Vulcan philosophy who instigated the Time of Awakening almost 2000 years ago — but Archer and T'Pol are highly skeptical of their professions of pacifism. Meanwhile, Trip Tucker is in command of Enterprise, and with Ambassador Soval's help, contends with an obstinate leader of the Vulcan High Command V'Las whose campaign against the Syrrannites could endanger the captain and first officer. And while Vulcan's state of unrest grows more violent, former Ambassador Soval reveals to Trip that the High Command also plans to launch a massive sneak attack against rival planet Andoria, an act that could pull Earth into interplanetary war.

Notes : 2nd of the 3 episodes of the mini-series dedicated to Vulcan's forge, as a reminder of the original series (Amok Time) and the animated series (Yesteryear). T'Pau makes the first historical appearance, as Surak, although both are interpreted at different age. Here they are played by actors chosen to look like the ones of the original series. B. Gray was the Admiral Chekote in 'Gambit I' (TNG) and 'The Circle' (DS9), although just seen in monitor. Graham, Foxworth and Cassidy (T'Les is T'Pol's mother) come back as their characters seen this season in Enterprise's episodes 'Home' and 'The Forge'. J. Rubinstein was John Evansville in 'The 37s' (VOY, s2) and the Mazarite Captain in 'Fallen Hero' (ENT, s1). One can discover in this episode the T'Karath Sanctuary, located in the Vulcan desert.
