Trip, Reed and Travis are sent to recover 3 Denobulan geologists expulsed from a planet after a coup d'etat, where they study a dangerous phenomenom similar to one threayening their own home world. But problems arise when the scientists refuse to give up their research. Meanwhile, the Enterprise rescues injured Antaran aliens onboard their damaged ship. But some refuse to be treated by Doctor Phlox due to tenses between their species. A Tribble appears in this episode.
