While exploring a dark nebulae, Archer receives news from the Earth that his long time rival for the space warp program Robinson has died. He then tells T'Pol the events surrounding the first tests of the warp 2 engine and of the race for the one breaking warp 2. When the test failled and the the ship was destroyed, he and a young Trip Tucker, who was working on the project, launched the NX-Beta without Starfleet's approval.

In a now annual tradition, 3 members of the USS Enterprise (CVN 65 of the navy-USA) awarded by the navy as sailors of the year make a guest appearance in the series. This time, they're not part of the crew but are in the mission control center of the NX-01 (They are Frey, Grant and Hunt). Canavan was the Maquis terrorist Tamal in Defiant (DS9) and Curneth in 
"Unforgettable" (VOY). Bevine played Bajoran Belar in Things Past (DS9), a security guard in
